The very popular multi-platform game Guitar Hero has been axed by it's publishers Activision Blizzard. The makers of the very big Franchises like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft announced that they are ditching the Guitar hero franchise because "The music-themed video games have faded out".

During this announcement they said they were also cutting around 500 people from the workforce. Activision Blizzard said that it's way to expensive to make new music games as the licensing of all the music and the cost to make a produce all the hardware (Guitars, Microphones, etc.) Although they will continue to support all other previous games of Guitar Hero.

The focus of this cut was to to put more work towards the Call of Duty franchise. This gives them a lot more money to create better than before Call of Duty games.

Sad to see GH go. It's fading out because they're publishing 4 new versions every quarter. Slow your roll a bit, and make a release more memorable.

I mean, how many GH versions were released in 2010? 12? 13?

Well, we still have rockband.

The only problem is that the producers of Rock Band are the ones losing money. They started to lose money so Activision took the initiative and shut down the Guitar Hero Franchise before they got into a lot of sales troubles. Rock band was my favourite though.

never expected that $& !!!!!

I never liked GH or Rockband but it was one of the greatest game ever made. Sad.

Man, I hate Blizzard and everything they stand for.

I think they pushed it too hard, to the point where people got sick of it entirely. Yeah it was a good game to play with a group of people, but they didn't need all those incarnations of it.

Yeah I've been hearing about this. But then again, it's a dying genre. As much as I loved playing it in the dorms, it had to happen. Followed man.

I understand the appeal of these games when you are with friends just messing around. But when people sit on their own and spend countless hours on it? (I see it all the time)

With all of that time spent in the game, they could be learning a real instrument! As a musician, this irony is beyond my own comprehension.

It makes sense, I agree with them, and I never really liked Guitar Hero anyway lol

I guess they milked the franchise too much and too soon,I had just bought the most recent game and then they had announced the next..Maybe in time they will bring it back!

This saddened me, especially when I saw that they are opening another CoD studio. That's what, 3 now?

Good. Nothing makes me rage more than milkers.

Following.

well thats what they get when they freaking release like 10 different versions and milk it to the end

We still have Rock Band, which is, in my opinion, better. The charts are harder, there's a keyboard instrument now, and they have way more songs and variety.

ATVI stock plummeted on this news. Hope the next release is a doozy.

Never really cared for Guitar Hero myself. Know plenty of other people that'll be upset, though.

Sam said...

@ Truth Finder, Unfortunately Dj hero is running on the Guitar Hero franchise too. So that will be stopping too :/

well, there's always rock band I guess...

Really interesting post, thanks man. Followed.

These developers piss me off. They juice a franchise for every penny it's worth by flooding the market with off-shoots until you can't stand it anymore, then move on. It destroys good games. I never liked Guitar Hero in the first place, but still.

Thank god, this game line has been strung out far too far.
Now they need to do the same for the Call of Duty's.
